PPI Radio Awards…and the winners are

Tonight (October 3rd) at a ceremony in the Lyrath Hotel Kilkenny, the 2014 winners of the PPI Radio Awards were announced. The ceremony was presented by comedian Barry Murphy to a packed room with many of Ireland’s well known radio presenters, producers, programme staff and radio station heads.

Today FM took home the prize of Full Service Station of the Year. FM104 won Music Station of the year and Radio Kerry were named Local Station of the year. The Outstanding Achievement Award was, for the first time ever, presented to two people, Lisa Ni Choisdealbha (Independent Broadcasters of Ireland) and JP Coakley (RTÉ) for their work bringing Radiodays Europe to Ireland in 2014.

Speaking at the Awards, Sean Murtagh Chair of the PPI Radio Awards committee said “Following six master classes in four cities, 635 entries, 81 judges listening to more than 16,000 minutes of audio in 25 judging sessions across four days, now it’s 620 of radio’s finest gathered in Lyrath to find out who is going to bring home Irish radio’s most sought-after accolade.”

2014 sees the more judges than ever before for the Awards, all of them drawn from the radio industry, north, south and across the water. They are required to judge each entry from the long list in its entirety, then they are whittled down to a shortlist.  The Gold winning entry along with the runner up Silver and Bronze are chosen from this shortlist.

The 2014 Hall of Fame inductees, announced in early September, were presented with plaques to celebrate their induction on the night. They are:

Paul Claffey – Mid West Radio
Tony Fenton – Today FM
Áine Lawlor – RTÉ Radio 1
