Petr Cech’s ice hockey team, the Oxford City Stars, has taken a significant step in response to the tragic incident involving Adam Johnson from the Nottingham Panthers. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Johnson lost his life during a match against the Sheffield Steelers when a skate blade cut his neck. His grieving mother has lovingly remembered him as an “incredible” son.
This devastating incident prompted the Oxford City Stars, who compete in the third division of English ice hockey and count former Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech among their players, to implement mandatory neck guards for all players and coaches. In a statement, the club announced their commitment to player safety: “The club has ordered and is now awaiting delivery of neck guards for all players and coaches. Once received, these guards will be utilised during all on-ice activities going forward.”
Shane Moore, the director of hockey operations at the Oxford City Stars, expressed the importance of this safety measure, saying, “A life has tragically been taken too soon in a freak accident, and if wearing neck guards can prevent another devastating loss, then we want to ensure we have done everything within our power to protect our players.”

Adam Johnson had begun his career with the National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins, and the team paid their respects: “The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins send our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and teammates of Adam Johnson. Adam spent three years as a member of the team here in Northeast Pennsylvania, was respected for his work on the ice, and was an important part of our community and organization. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time.” The club also observed a minute of silence during their recent match in memory of Johnson.
