ABC Health and Leisure Trust funds life-changing opportunity at Belfast School of Performing Arts
Seven young people from socially deprived areas of North Belfast have been given a life-changing opportunity to pursue their passion for performing arts, thanks to a scholarship programme funded by ABC Health and Leisure Trust.
The initiative has enabled the students to attend Belfast School of Performing Arts (BSPA), removing financial barriers and ensuring that access to high-quality training in acting, singing and dance is open to all.
The programme is designed to support young people, helping to build confidence, develop creativity and improve overall wellbeing through participation in the arts and builds on the schools commitment to ensure that the performing arts is accessible to all.
Tina McVeigh, Director of BSPA, said the impact of the scholarships will be transformational:
“Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. Last year we celebrated BSPA’s 15 year anniversary by creating 15 scholarships, this now adds to that by giving more young people the chance to discover their voice, build confidence and be part of something positive. Performing arts can be truly life-changing, and we are proud to welcome these students into BSPA.”
The scholarships have been made possible through ABC Health and Leisure Trust, a community-focused organisation committed to improving health, education and opportunities for people living in areas of deprivation.
Elaine Burns, Chairperson, ABC Health and Leisure Trust, said:
“We are delighted to support this initiative, which reflects our commitment to investing in young people and strengthening communities. By supporting access to performing arts, we are helping to build confidence, encourage creativity and create positive pathways for young people across North Belfast.”
One of the scholarship recipients, Abbie McCarthy, aged 15 said the opportunity means everything:
“I’m so excited to be a part of BSPA. I’ve always loved singing and acting, and this gives me the chance to really follow my dream and meet new friends, I’ve already appeared on stage in our production of Annie Jr, it was amazing and I’m looking forward to taking part in the summer production “Matilda Jr!”
In addition to developing performance skills, the programme will foster inclusion, encourage cross-community engagement and provide a safe, supportive environment for young people to grow.
BSPA has a strong track record of nurturing talent, with around 1000 students across NI taking part in the weekly classes and summer youth projects. Many former students have progressed to leading drama schools and careers in the creative industries, but the magic truly happens with young people who are making new friends, improving their academic ability, and glowing with confidence due to being a part of the school.
This scholarship programme represents a shared commitment to ensuring that every young person regardless of background can reach their full potential.
