Michael “Murphy” McCormick is a well-known local butcher thanks to his locally sourced yet superstitious steaks and has been sharing his stories as part of a new campaign to celebrate EUROSPAR NI’s top quality in-store butcheries across Northern Ireland.
Murphy’s steaks became famous in 2011 when he gifted a couple of sirloins to Darren Clarke, joking they’d bring him some luck just before he won The Open.
Fast forward three years to 2014 and when Murphy spies Rory McIlroy outside his shop ahead of The Open at Royal Liverpool, he also gets some lucky steaks, and the rest is history.
Mr McCormick has now opened a new counter as one of the 60+ in EUROSPAR supermarkets across NI. Murphy’s II resides in EUROSPAR Ballyhackamore in east Belfast, and with just over ten weeks until The Open comes to Royal Portrush, he’s hoping to offer out more lucky steaks to Open winning hopefuls.
He says; “We’ll be keeping an eye out for any of the golfers around the area, and if we see anyone, we’ll certainly be gifting them a couple of Sirloin steaks, just like we did with Darren and Rory.”
Murphy – as everyone affectionately calls him – has been in the butchery business for over 50 years and opened his second counter in the east of the city at the tail end of 2018 when the new, £1.3m community supermarket was developed.
Murphy continued; “this was a brilliant opportunity for us to meet a new community and be under the same roof of every essential a customer is shopping for. We’re in a great location; Ballyhackamore village is known for being a place to shop local, and we’re pleased to be offering fresh, local meat from farms in Ballymena and offering cutting, cooking and serving advice for our customers.”
The new butchery campaign from EUROSPAR NI champions the 60+ local butchers within EUROSPAR community supermarkets across Northern Ireland.
Jade Manning, Brand Manager for EUROSPAR and VIVOXTRA in Northern Ireland says; “We’re very proud of our local credentials from offering fresh produce to working with local suppliers, which extends to our concession counters in store.
“Murphy is a well-known, friendly face who shoppers across Belfast will know from his famous shop on the Lisburn Road, and we’re very pleased to have Murphy’s II open within the all-new EUROSPAR Ballyhackamore.
“Our campaign aims to champion and celebrate those local butchery businesses across our supermarkets who are working within their local communities providing meat and poultry and employing local people.”
Henderson Group will also go on to reward their in-store butchers during the Fresh Innovation Awards which take place at Balmoral Show on the 17th May.
