With just two weeks to go Marie Curie, the charity for people living with a terminal illness, is urging LoveBelfast readers to sign up to Walk Ten on 1 September 2017.
Sponsored by Forestside Shopping centre, join Walk Ten for a twilight walk with a festival atmosphere, music and entertainment and firework finish in the grounds of Stormont Estate. The charity is aiming to raise £110,000 from the event if 1,100 people take part and each raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship.
Now in its eighth year the event has raised over £750,000 for Marie Curie. In Northern Ireland the charity provides hands on care and support at its Belfast hospice, day hospice outpatient services in Belfast, Newtownards, Lisburn and Downpatrick and nursing service supporting people in their own home. Volunteers also offer companionship and emotional support through the Marie Curie Helper service.
Marie Curie Helper volunteer Lisa Perry and her daughter Caithlan took part in last year’s event in memory of Lisa’s father, Jimmy, who died of cancer over 20 years ago. Lisa said: “Walk Ten is a great event, a beautiful walk in great surroundings with so many people supporting Marie Curie. We found the end very emotional – listening to the nurse speak and watching the fireworks.”
Phil Kane Marie Curie Fundraising Manager said: “With just a two weeks to go I’d encourage everyone to sign up now to Walk Ten and help support families living with a terminal illness. You can walk in memory of someone close to you or simply get together with friends, family or colleagues and take part in a really fun, sociable event.”
Forestside Shopping Centre Manager Lee Cutler said: “Forestside are proud to be lending a hand to this worthy event again, and would like to encourage as many people as possible to join us onSeptember 1. With your help, we can make a difference for Marie Curie.”
