Launch of ‘Art from the Heart’ comp to bring generations together

Radius Housing is calling all promising young Picassos, Banksys or Hockneys from across Northern Ireland to enter their ‘Art from the Heart’ competition.

Children and young people of all ages and abilities are asked to take a blank page or canvas and fill it with their ideas, using whatever creative materials they have at home.

Radius provides housing and services for over 30,000 people including families, elderly and vulnerable people, many of whom are currently self-isolating and unable to see family and friends at this time. Radius plans to help brighten their days by distributing the artwork submitted to our sheltered housing and care home residents. The winning artwork will also be published and displayed extensively throughout Northern Ireland.

Art work submitted will be judged by a prestigious panel of experts, including celebrated Derry/Londonderry artist Conor Larkin, Executive Director of ArtsEkta, Nisha Tandon, Conor Shields from Community Arts Partnership and Diana Fitzsimons Chair of Radius Housing.

The themes for each age category aim to inspire our youth and capture the strong sense of community being witnessed all around us at present.

The four categories themes are:

  • Aged 3 – 7: draw a picture of ‘Your happy place’.
  • Aged 8-13: budding artists in this age group are encouraged to design a Radius Community Mascot.
  • Aged 14-18: entries are invited illustrating ‘Community Spirit’.
  • Aged 18 and under Children and Young People with Special Education Needs: artists in this category can submit entries based on ‘Community’

Individual prizes will be awarded for each category winner, with an overall winner’s prize of a much sought after Nintendo Switch console.

John McLean, Radius Housing Chief Executive said:  “Our Art from the Heart competition will give budding young artists across Northern Ireland, not only a chance to spread some joy to the older generation, but also to showcase their own creative talent. We have exciting plans to showcase the winning entries so I would encourage all young people, particularly GCSE and A Level art students to send us your work.

“We are living through extraordinary times and this competition aims to capture the amazing sense of support and generosity being witnessed all across Northern Ireland and perhaps leave a legacy embodying that community spirit and kindness which we can all be proud of,” he added.

The competition deadline for entries is 8th May 2020 so get creative and not only will you add some sparkle to an older person’s day but you could be one of the lucky winners!

Each category winner will receive a £100 voucher, with one overall winner receiving a Nintendo Switch. Entries can be emailed to ideas@radiushousing.org or posted FREEPOST to: FREEPOST RSBH-RZZA-UUAE, 38-52 Lisburn Road, Belfast BT9 6AA.
