A BELFAST cycling club is urging all cycling groups to dedicate a club ride on June 26 to the victims and families of a recent tragedy in the United States that left five cyclists dead.
On June 8, the town of Kalamazoo, Michigan – still reeling from a mass shooting incident in February this year – was left in shock when cyclists enjoying a group ride were mowed down by a pick-up truck driver. Five members of the group, aged from 42 to 74, were killed instantly while four are still receiving treatment for serious injuries.
On June 26, cyclists from all over the world will support a #KalamazooStrong ride in honour of those who died.
Titanic Quarter Cycling Club, which enjoyed success in the recent Northern Ireland Gran Fondo, is encouraging cycling clubs all over Ireland to host a #KalamazooStrong ride.
The club’s Communications Officer, Alex McGreevy, said: “We were contacted about the memorial ride by the #KalamazooStrong organisation after one of our members made a donation to the appeal supporting the families of the victims.
“When there’s a cycling tragedy such as this, cyclists all over the world are affected. We are hosting a #KalamazooStrong leisure ride that will take us from Titanic Quarter to Comber via Belfast city centre. We are doing this to honour those who died in Kalamazoo and we would encourage the many cycling clubs all over the island of Ireland to join in and organise a #KalamazooStrong club ride on June 26. Clubs and cyclists can show their support for Kalamazoo by taking photos on their ride and engaging online using the #KalamazooStrong hashtag.”
Earlier this week former Tour de France rider Lance Armstrong helped cyclists finish the ride the tragic cyclists set out to do on June 8.
