Veteran broadcaster and one of Britain’s most accomplished journalists John Sergeant will host the inaugural Royal Television Society (RTS) Programme Awards for Northern Ireland, a ceremony celebrating the best of the local TV production industry. The event will take place on the 5th November 2015, coinciding with the annual Belfast Media Festival.

Commenting on the announcement, Kieran Doherty, RTS NI Awards Committee Chair and Managing Director of local TV production company Stellify Media said; “As we are set to celebrate the best of NI TV Production talent through the first RTS Programme Awards here we are delighted to welcome the broadcasting legend, John Sergeant as our host for the evening. John has an amazing career spanning political journalism and wider broadcasting, having worked as Chief Political correspondent with the BBC and subsequently as Political Editor at ITN. His previous assignments also included spells in Vietnam, the Middle East and Northern Ireland.  Now a successful author and freelance journalist, John still regularly features on our TV screens on programmes ranging from The One Show to Strictly Come Dancing. This breadth of experience across TV makes him an ideal choice as our host for these awards.”

Responding to the invitation, John said:

“I am delighted to be hosting the inaugural RTS NI programme awards. Northern Ireland has now firmly established itself at the forefront of television production and this is the perfect opportunity to showcase the exceptional talent the region has to offer. I look forward to a fantastic evening celebrating Northern Ireland’s critically acclaimed production talent and its outstanding creative community.”

Also present on the night will be a range of local TV talent including Christine Bleakley, who will return to Belfast to present a selection of the evening’s awards.

Recognising the work of exceptional production teams and spanning all genres of television programming from news and current affairs to drama and animation, the regional awards represent a new opportunity to recognise the importance of the industry to the local economy and to celebrate the wealth of local talent and creativity on home ground. It comes at a time when the local TV and film production industry has never been stronger and is playing an important role in job and skills creation as well as showcasing the best of Northern Ireland on a world stage.

The RTS has partnered with BBC Northern Ireland, Channel 4, Northern Ireland Screen and UTV to stage its inaugural Programme Awards for Northern Ireland.
