Belfast tech company Hurree has launched its most community-driven Christmas initiative yet, supporting 12 charities and causes chosen directly by its team. The campaign, ‘12 Days of Giving Back’, shines a light on small, grassroots organisations that are often overlooked during the busy festive fundraising season.
Instead of running a typical corporate appeal, Hurree handed decision-making to its staff. Each person nominated a charity meaningful to them, resulting in a diverse mix of animal rescue groups, women’s services, food banks, community support networks and volunteer-led initiatives across Northern Ireland.
CEO Aaron Gibson has committed to donating to all 12 charities, with the hope that sharing the list will inspire other NI businesses to support local causes this December.
A people-first approach to giving back
Speaking about the initiative, Aaron Gibson said:
“Some of the most important organisations in our communities are also the smallest. They’re run by volunteers, or by families who have lived through something difficult and decided to make things better for others. We wanted to shine a light on those groups, the ones that don’t always get big attention but make a big difference. This isn’t about press, it’s about people. If sharing our list encourages even one more business to do something similar, then that’s a win for everyone.”
Charities chosen by the Hurree team
The 2025 list includes:
- Assisi Animal Sanctuary – supporting rescue animals across NI
- Jordan’s Gift – supporting disadvantaged young people
- Belfast & Lisburn Women’s Aid – offering vital support to women and children experiencing domestic abuse
- Tattooed Santa Appeal – providing meals and gifts to the elderly, homeless and families in need
- Simon Community NI – supporting those experiencing homelessness
- Iveagh Nursing Home (Banbridge) – contributing to the residents’ Comfort Fund
- Cash for Kids – Mission Christmas – helping ensure no child wakes up without a gift
- Refuweegee – welcoming and supporting displaced families
- Lighthouse – suicide prevention support and services for bereaved families
- Hey Girls – providing free, sustainable period products across NI
- Walk INN Food Bank – supporting families and individuals across Belfast
- The Donkey Sanctuary, Belfast – providing lifelong care for rescued donkeys, including Hurree’s adopted donkey, Marko
A simple model any business can adopt
The initiative is intentionally straightforward: staff choose causes that matter to them, and the company backs them. Hurree believes this approach can be replicated by any organisation wanting to make a meaningful local impact.
Gibson added:
“You don’t need a huge CSR programme to help your community. Ask your team what matters to them. Choose a few local groups. Then do something meaningful and useful. Every business can do that.”
