Hundreds of people joined Belfast’s cycling revolution – by taking to the streets for the city’s second ever Ciclovia day.

Following a successful pilot last year, Ciclovia – Spanish for cycle freeway – was back on the streets again this year.

A traffic-free cycle freeway was created by the organisers, with the route running from Botanic Gardens, along Botanic Avenue, through Shaftesbury Square, Dublin Road, Bedford Street, Donegall Square West and to the front of Belfast City Hall.

There were also fun activities at Botanic Gardens and City Hall. Including circus performers, musicians, choirs, and cycling training and safety including a lorry for driver and cyclist safety awareness demonstration events at Donegall Square West.

Organisers hailed the success of the day, describing it as “a fun, free cycling event for all ages and abilities which aims to promote community cohesion, physical and mental well-being as well as cycling awareness and safety”.

Participants could start the route wherever they wanted and cycle up and down or in any direction. Belfast Bikes also allowed those without their own cycles to join the fun.
