As the UK lifts its restrictions (slowly) and flowers start to bloom, party lovers might start to wonder if a spring gathering may just be possible. Well, if our roadmap is to be believed, reasonable numbers will be allowed to meet outside from mid-May, so there’s no reason why you can’t pick a date, invite some guests, then tentatively plan an awesome event.
Yes, it might end up being postponed, but we’re all used to that now, and if it turns out not to be, then yours will be the party everyone can make.
It’ll need to be outdoors (come rain or shine), and you’ll need to be sensible, but here’s how to make it fantastic while also safe.
The theme
Whether it’s a kids’ party, an engagement party, or a we-haven’t-met-up-for-ages party, there are lots of options for what you can do so long as you plan the layout. You could hold a mini-festival in your garden, with bean bags and deck chairs distributed a good distance apart. A children’s party could include games where each family sits in their own pod.
Don’t limit yourself – there’s always a way to do things if you plan. And so long as you have all the decorations and accessories you’d normally have at a spring party, it’s going to look the part.
Number of guests
The maximum number will depend on where in the UK you are, but keep the initial guestlist small, because you don’t want to have to tell people they can’t come further down the line (a small number of guests will also give the party an exclusive feel!).
Food and drink
Again, don’t feel limited by what you can serve, but perhaps think about how to present it in a safe way. Try serving food in individual tubs, boxes and jars to minimise cross-contamination. You might even want to provide guests with their own food box (who wouldn’t want to receive a food box?!). The artist in you can make these look great, and you might enjoy the creativity so much it’s something you continue to do once the pandemic is over.
If you’re holding a birthday party, perhaps individual cupcakes might be preferable to one big cake, and drinks should be served in small bottles, cans and cartons.
Masks and sanitiser
If you think people should wear masks, but hate the thought of asking them to do so, make your own in the theme of the party. So if, say, you have a jungle theme, you could create tiger-print masks for everyone to wear
Make sure you have hand sanitiser by food tables and toilets, and have liquid soap for people to use in the bathroom.
So long as you take reasonable precautions people will be chomping at the bit to get socialising again, so everyone will be keen to make the party a good one. Think of an idea, go with it, be prepared for a downpour, and it’ll be a day you’ll never forget.
