In a challenging Elite League matchup at the Spectrum Centre, the Stena Line Belfast Giants experienced a setback, succumbing 3-1 to the Guildford Flames. The game on Sunday evening saw the Giants unable to recover from their recent slump.
Guildford Flames took control in the first period with rapid-fire goals from Ben O’Connor and Peter Crinella, scored just 24 seconds apart. Bryan Lemos extended the lead in the second period. Matt McLeod’s late goal for the Giants was merely a consolation.
During the opening period, the Giants missed opportunities to score, despite Guildford incurring penalties. The Flames capitalized with O’Connor scoring a powerful shot, quickly followed by Crinella’s unchallenged goal.
Despite using their timeout, the Giants failed to score in the first period. The second period saw the Giants hitting the crossbar twice, once by Charlie Curti and then by Ciaran Long. However, the Flames increased their lead with Lemos’ goal late in the period.
The third period saw the Giants attempting a comeback, but a critical penalty against Miles Gendron hindered their efforts. Nonetheless, McLeod managed to score for Belfast, preventing a shutout.
The Giants are scheduled for an Elite League double-header next weekend, facing the Sheffield Steelers and the Manchester Storm, followed by a home game against the Glasgow Clan.
