The Stena Line Belfast Giants returned to the Odyssey Arena on Friday in front of over 5,000 fans. Craig Peacock and Mark Garside returned to the line-up to try and extend on the 4-point weekend the team brought home on their road trip last weekend. The home team had an abundance of chances on goal but visiting netminder Craig Kowalski took home a shutout as the Giants went down 4-0.
The first period wasn’t kind for the Giants with the Panthers coming out on top despite the same amount of shots on goal. Belfast started encouragingly but it was Nottingham who struck first at 9:18 against the run of play from Guillaume Doucet. He then doubled his account at 10:56 to make it two for the Panthers. The Panthers furthered their lead on the powerplay at 18:00 when Robert Farmer got the final tip on a Cohen slapshot to make it 3-0 going into the first intermission.
The second period came and went without many talking points but neither team could get the puck over the crease, including during the four powerplays the Panthers presented the Giants with.
In the last twenty minutes, the pace of the game didn’t alter and the game boiled over at 53:22 with captain Adam Keefe dropping the gloves with Greg Jacina. Shortly after, the Panthers heaped more misery on the home team when Farmer reprinted his name on the scoresheet at 55:58.
The Giants return to action on Saturday night at the Odyssey against the Fife Flyers, face-off 7pm, in the first of two back-to-back games against the Scottish side, with the Giants travelling to Fife on Sunday evening.
Final Score: Stena Line Belfast Giants 0-4 Nottingham Panthers
