The Stena Line Belfast Giants made it a four point weekend at the Odyssey Arena with a 6-3 regulation win over the Sheffield Steelers following up on the 5-3 win on Friday night.

Both teams created plenty of scoring chances to test the netminders in the first 20 minutes, and it was the hosts who had the puck in the net first – however the goal was ruled out due to a player in the crease and a melee ensued with Ray Sawada and Cullen Eddy dropping the gloves.

At 3:21 it was the Sheffield Steelers who were first on the scoresheet from Tyler Mosienko. Although the fans in Belfast didn’t have to wait long for the equaliser as Colin Shields scored with a slapshot on the powerplay at 4:26. Yet again, the Giants forced the puck over the line later in the fist period only to have the referee wave it off – this time because of High-Sticking. Colten Fretter made sure the Steelers went into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead, scoring off the crossbar at 15:53.

The second period continued with end-to-end hockey, and it wasn’t until 33:46 that a Cody Brookwell slapshot equalised proceedings for the Giants. Less than 2 minutes later, the Giants led 4-2 with goals coming from Darryl Lloyd and Ray Sawada. The Steelers got one back though from Jason Hewitt before Craig Peacock fired home with a stunning slapshot from the point at 38:32.

The third period was quieter on the goal front but neither netminder was quite able to relax. It wasn’t until 55:35 that Mike Kompon increased the lead to 6-3 after some great work by Darryl Lloyd in the slot. The Giants continued to defend well to prevent the Steelers from chipping away at the lead to ensure another high-scoring high-energy win in front of the 10,500+ Odyssey Arena crowd this weekend.
