I love visiting La Bastille Restaurant. I never used to ever order fish from a menu but since dinning here I’ve changed my habits and now fish of the day is of real interest. La Bastille isn’t just a seafood restaurant, they have plenty of meat on the menu from steak to rabbit, but each of the Chefs have a passion for seafood. So when you ask them to make something, a fish dish is always what they suggest….

Sea trout with sauté potatoes, poached egg, rocket apple fennel salad.
Chef Gareth Roberts hails from Derry. He’s been a Chef in Belfast now for a number of years. What impressed me the most was how organised and efficient he was. This dish felt like it was made in 5 mins and as easy as boiling an egg. Though I’m sure if I was to try it at home I’d find it so much harder.

I’ve never tried Sea trout before. So far I’ve stuck with white fish so this was a new challenge as it looked similar to Salmon and there’s just something about Salmon I just can’t eat, but I didn’t want Gareth to know that.

A whole sea trout will usually be gutted, but check that the bitter-tasting blood-line that runs close to the backbone has also been removed. Fillets require pin-boning and the skin can be removed if desired.

Sea trout according to Gareth is excellent poached, grilled and pan-fried. Like salmon, it can be served with citrus flavours and hollandaise sauce and available in St Georges Market.

When you watch the video, you’ll understand how easy Gareth makes it look…

The food was delicious and perfect for a summers day. The Trout portion is even smaller than what is normally served as was only a demo. The poached egg and fish was a perfect combination.

If you have never tried La Bastille on the Lisburn Road, I highly recommend it.
Excellent food, romantic atmosphere and they currently have a great Two for One offer if you prebook and quote it on Monday – Friday.
