Fancy a stake in your own brewery? One Belfast man is offering the public the chance Boundary Brewing is Belfast’s first co-operative craft beer venture, and Northern Ireland’s first crowd-funded brewery. Co-founder and brewer Matthew Dick (30) from Belfast, left a PhD behind and a full- time job as a brewer with a technology firm to join six other founding members to start Boundary Brewing. Beer drinkers across Northern Ireland and beyond now have the chance to grab a stake in the city’s first co-operative brewery – entirely run and owned by its members, and based right in the city – soon to be located in the Holywood Arches area of east Belfast.

For as little as just £100, you become a member – which gives you a vote and say in how the brewery is run and operated.

It’s a democratic way to do business – one member, one vote.

Co-founder and brewer Matthew Dick said: “We are a brewery that is run, and owned, by its members.” “Once the brewery becomes profitable, members can expect to receive a paid dividend, plus have their say in how the business is run.”

Boundary Brewing is aiming to raise £70,000 from what’s known as a community share offer – and it’s now open to the public.

Demand couldn’t be stronger for craft beer. There are now 15 microbreweries in Northern Ireland – a three-fold increase on a decade ago. There are also more than 2,000 breweries in the US – the country which paved the way for the craft beer revolution.

“We are offering the beer drinking public something new and different – from the bottles to the labels, design and the beer itself. It will be something Northern Ireland hasn’t seen

before,” Mr Dick said. “We draw our inspiration from the US craft beer revolution and traditional Belgian styles – not the local types of beer the public has been used to.”

Boundary Brewing will embrace modern brewing styles and techniques – producing beers such as fresh and hoppy India Pale Ales, and deep, warming, full-bodied stouts, when it gets up-and-running early next year.

“I got into beer when I first visited Belgium and then lived in the US for five years – when I came home I really missed it,” Mr Dick said. “Boundary Brewing is all about local support – we can’t do it without the public’s help. “There’s a craft beer revolution going on at the moment, and we are only on the base of a wave – just visit our website to get involved.”
