Why You Should Ditch Traditional Shampoo (And What to Use Instead)

There are chemicals in everything we use these days, from our food to our beauty products, and especially our shampoo! Traditional shampoos are a mix of some truly terrible chemicals that strip your hair of all its nutrients and will leave your hair gasping for life.

So, what can you use instead? We’ve got you covered. Read on to find out!

What’s the Issue with Shampoo?

If we haven’t already managed to convince you that traditional shampoos are bad for you, here’s a full explanation on the topic!

Traditional shampoos, regardless of their price, contain harmful ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate. Even the shampoos that claim to not contain any sulfates can have a version of this chemical that is just as harmful. The detergents and sulfates strip your hair of its important nutrients and oils, leaving it dry and lackluster.

To combat the dryness, you will end up needing a range of other products. You probably will need a conditioner, hair mask, styling products, and more. The chances are that you’re probably going to buy this from the same company that produces your shampoo!

Therefore, your shampoo is forcing you to wash your hair more often, further pushing you into a vicious cycle. The chemicals in traditional shampoos can also cause allergies, rashes, infections, and more. Therefore, to avoid these issues, it’s time to ditch such products.

Alternative Solutions To Chemical Shampoos

So, if you’ve thrown your chemical shampoos in the trash, what do you use now? Well, we have a bunch of options for you to choose from!

1.       Natural Shampoos

If you’re not ready to truly let go and embrace a no-shampoo approach just yet, there are several natural shampoos in the market. They’re lacking in chemicals and still do the same job as a traditional shampoo. They’re often better!

Products like curlsmith are all-natural but still remove build-up, dirt, product, and more without losing any moisture or essential oils. There are also many more companies coming up with natural shampoos for curly and wavy hair; there are options for every hair type!

2.       Shampoo Bars

If you’ve truly embraced the no-chemical lifestyle, then shampoo bars will be your best friend! These are the closest natural alternative you’ll find to shampoo, and it’s incredibly easy to use them as well. You lather them up to create a foam that you can use to clean your hair as needed! These bars typically contain only natural ingredients.

3.       Clay

There are different types of clay you can use for your own hair that doubles as a great cleanser for your skin! You can make a quick paste out of the clay and apply it thoroughly to your hair, much like a hair mask and then rinse it off. It’s a great way to condition and clean at the same time! The clays are on the expensive side, but they’re may very well be cheaper than your shampoo routine!

4.       Water

Surprisingly enough, you don’t actually need more than water to clean your hair! Now, you’re probably feeling skeptical right now, but water works wonders for hair. There are no chemicals, no additional ingredients: it’s the healthiest product for your hair.

Using water to clean your hair isn’t just about letting it get wet but more about the massage: you’ve really got to massage your scalp to get the grimy build-up and dirt out of your hair. Once you properly rinse off your hair and scalp, you’ll find that your hair is clean and healthy!

We’re not going to lie, the first few weeks will be pretty uncomfortable, but once you get your hair and scalp used to it, you’ll never use a product again!

What About Conditioner?

Ditching your shampoo seems easy enough, but what do you do about your trusty conditioner? Well, a lot of natural shampoos come as 2-in-1 products with conditioner already in them! Many natural alternatives are also naturally moisturizing and conditioning.

If you feel like you need something more from your natural alternatives, then Apple Cider Vinegar should be your go-to. You need just a splash in about half a cup of water and then you soak the ends of your hair in the mixture for a few minutes. Then just rinse it off and look at the difference!

On a side note, if you’re using ingredients like lemon, egg, and tea tree oil in your hair, then using this ‘conditioner’ is a good idea. These ingredients can be quite drying and cause a lot of frizz.

Endnotes

In times like ours, it’s necessary to look for alternatives to the chemicals we’ve become so dependent on. We already have so much available to us in nature: not using  it is harming the planet and ourselves. So, ditch the chemical shampoos as go all-natural!
