The Belfast Baking Company, located in the Titanic Quarter, will this week undertake Belfast’s first celebrity bake off in support of the Mary Peters Trust, which raises funds to support young athletes, both able bodied and disabled, to achieve their full sporting potential and ambition in a wide range of sports.
The bakery, which last week created a mammoth 15 stone, 7ft long version of RMS Titanic, is this week supporting the Mary Peters Trust to fundraise for local athletes. The bake off itself will be held in the Belfast Baking Company – with four ‘bakers’ competing for the title of the first ‘The Belfast Baking Company – Celebrity Baker 2016’ competition.
Dame Mary Peters, will be joined in the bakery by former Ulster Rugby player, Paddy Wallace, Adam Keefe from Stena Line Belfast Giants, and BBC Sports presenter, Stephen Watson. The four will be honing their baking skills in the main kitchen under the watch of master baker, John Halliday embarking on creating deserts and specialist traditional breads for the fundraising event later in the evening.

The Belfast Bake Off team of ‘talented sports and media people’ but ‘not very talented bakers’, will be on site from lunchtime on Monday, learning the tricks of the trade and competing for the title of Belfast Baking Company – Celebrity Baker 2016. Members of the public are invited to come along and see the bakers in action, and vote for their favourite baker to win the competition later that evening.
On Monday evening, a fundraising event will see over 40 people join with some of the novice bakers to taste their creations and vote for the master baker from the day’s competition! Tickets for the event, which are selling fast, are £50 per head which includes a gourmet meal. To book tickets for the Baking Extravaganza event call the Baking Company on 028 9018 3690
Commenting on the fundraising event, Paul McDonald, owner of The Belfast Baking Company, said:
“We are delighted to be hosting this event for the Dame Mary Peters Trust, it will combine fun and fundraising. The Trust does excellent work with young sports people, and has had huge success in the last 40 years developing and working with exceptional local sports men and women here including Carl Frampton, Paddy Barnes, Graeme McDowell and Kelly Gallagher. We are really looking forward to having the kitchen buzzing with their energy, and more than likely nervous anticipation.”
Discussing the event, Dame Mary Peters, said:
“I’m really looking forward to baking and showing these young upstarts how it’s done! Actually, I’m really terrified! It has been years since I’ve baked and so I am looking forward to seeing how it is really done. The Belfast Baking Company and Paul McDonald have been so generous by supporting my charity. Come along, taste our creations and help some of our young talented sportspeople at the same time!”
The Belfast Baking Company has been open in the Titanic Quarter since November 2015. To follow the bake off teams progress visit the Bakery on Monday, or follow The Belfast Baking Company on Facebook or Twitter @belfastbakingco or www.facebook.com/belfastbakingcompany.
