Chris Shields Confident There’s More to Come After Signing New Linfield Deal

Linfield FC midfielder Chris Shields believes his best days in a blue shirt are still ahead after committing his future to the Blues while continuing his recovery from a long-term injury.

The experienced 35-year-old has put pen to paper on a new deal at Windsor Park, offering clarity on his future as he focuses on returning to full fitness ahead of next season.

Speaking after signing the contract, Shields admitted there was a sense of relief at getting the deal over the line.

“I’m very happy it’s done,” Shields said. “When you pick up a long-term injury at my age, you do start to think about other things, but I’m glad everything is sorted now. My focus is on getting back fit and the progress is going really well.”

Although eager to contribute this season, the midfielder is taking a long-term view.

“As much as I’d love to be involved this season, I know I have to concentrate on being ready for next year.”

The Mental Battle of Injury

Shields also opened up on the mental challenges of being sidelined — something he admits has been just as difficult as the physical recovery.

“It’s been torture really. There’s the physical side of the injury, but the mental side is just as hard. I’ve never had an injury like this before and I’ve always been involved in everything. Sitting and watching has been really difficult — I’m not a great spectator.”

A Standout Spell at Windsor Park

Since joining Linfield in 2021, Shields has enjoyed a hugely successful period with the club, winning two league titles, two League Cups, and playing a key role in memorable European campaigns.

“I’ve loved my time here. I’ve never hidden that,” he said. “Since I made the switch in 2021, I can’t really see myself playing anywhere else. Hopefully I’m here for the foreseeable future and I just want to get back playing.”

Hungry to Prove a Point

Despite his experience, Shields says his injury has only strengthened his motivation.

“That’s why I came here — the demands and expectations. With me being out for a year now, I’ve another point to prove. Some players at my age might think that’s them finished, but it’s given me extra drive and fire in the belly.”

“I’ve always played my best when I’ve had something to prove, and I definitely have that for next season.”

One Eye on Life After Football?

Shields also showed his lighter side after recently featuring in a Linfield video campaign promoting the festive Big Two derby.

“I think I single-handedly sold the most tickets in Big Two derby history,” he joked. “When I finish here, they’ll probably find something for me to do in the office!”
