LoveBelfast Review: BSPA’s Pippin at The MAC

Last night we had the pleasure of attending the Belfast School of Performing Arts’ (BSPA) Senior Summer Youth Project production of Pippin at The MAC theatre – and what an extraordinary evening it was.

From the very first note, it was clear that this was no ordinary youth theatre project. Forty-five incredibly talented young performers from across Northern Ireland, aged just 14–22, took to the stage with the energy, discipline and professionalism of a seasoned company.

Standout Performances

Seventeen-year-old Oliver Chestnutt, in the lead role of Pippin, was nothing short of outstanding. Mature, assured and deeply moving, he embodied the restless young prince perfectly, balancing innocence with a strong emotional depth. Oliver’s performance would not have looked out of place on a professional stage – he was perfectly cast for the role.

Max as Charlemagne delivered a commanding and hugely entertaining performance. Every line was filled with wit and perfect comic timing – his delivery of the king’s sarcasm had the audience laughing throughout. He is definitely one to watch for the future.

Creative Excellence

The show, guided by Director Peter Corry MBE, Choreographer Mira Rendilhero and Musical Director Adam Darcy, was full of high-energy ensemble work, crisp choreography, and powerful vocals. Together, they brought Stephen Schwartz’s unforgettable score (the genius behind Wicked and Godspell) to life with vibrancy and flair.

The whole cast demonstrated maturity, commitment and passion – a real testament to the intensive three-week rehearsal period. The production was polished, professional, and left the audience both moved and inspired.

Why Pippin Matters

At its heart, Pippin is a story about a young person trying to figure out what life is really about. The character of Pippin wants to find something extraordinary – glory, fame, adventure – but learns that sometimes happiness is found in the simple, ordinary things: love, family, and living true to yourself.

For young people watching (and performing), it’s a powerful reminder that you don’t have to have all the answers right now. Life is about choices, and it’s okay not to know exactly where you’re going. What matters is being true to yourself, trying new things, and realising that sometimes the most meaningful moments are the ones that feel the most ordinary.

Final Thoughts

BSPA’s Pippin was more than just a youth theatre project – it was a professional-level production filled with heart, humour and inspiration. Every single cast member should be proud of what they achieved. For the audience, it was a summer evening of sheer joy and theatre magic.

Performances continue at The MAC, Belfast, on 22nd and 23rd August. Don’t miss the chance to see some of Northern Ireland’s brightest young talent light up the stage.
