As part of the UK Theatre Awards 2017 Belfast’s Grand Opera House has been voted Northern Ireland’s Most Welcoming Theatre.

The awards, hosted by UK Theatre in association with Smooth Radio, is an opportunity for audiences to celebrate their local theatre. The Northern Ireland title forms part of the Most Welcoming Theatre Award for which 175 venues across the UK are eligible to compete. As a winner of the regional award the Grand Opera House, alongside eleven venues in Scotland, England and Wales, has been nominated for the overall title of UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre 2017.

Ian Wilson, chief executive of the Grand Opera House, said:

“Seven weeks ago the Grand Opera House called on the Northern Ireland public to support its bid to win the UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre Award 2017. We are delighted to be crowned Northern Ireland’s Most Welcoming Theatre and to be nominated for the UK title. We are overwhelmed by the response received and on behalf of my colleagues I would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote for the Grand Opera House.“

Julian Bird, chief executive of UK Theatre, said:

“The response to this year’s vote has been incredible, showing how valuable theatres are to communities across the UK. It takes a skilled and dedicated team to run a venue. This award gives the public a chance to recognise that, and say thank you.”

The coveted overall national title of the UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre will be announced at the UK Theatre Awards which takes place at London’s Guildhall on Sunday 15 October 2017.
