The Stena Line Belfast Giants ended 2015 on a winning note with a 5-2 victory over the Dundee Stars and moving into second place in the Elite League standings in the process. The Giants now lie six points behind the Cardiff Devils with three games in hand on the Welsh side.
The Giants responded well to a home defeat at the hands of the Braehead Clan the previous night. However, in the first period it was the visitors who opened the scoring – through the Elite League’s leading goal scorer Lou Dickenson who notched his 18th of the season at 15:59 with the Giants on the powerplay.
However, 29 seconds later the game was level as Mike Radja took advantage of the extra man – finding the net at 16:28, assisted by James Desmarais and Craig Peacock.
James Desmarais got the go-ahead goal at 27:52 with the Giants second powerplay goal of the game, assisted by Darryl Lloyd and Kris Beech, to give the home side a 2-1 lead.
The Giants extended their lead before the end of the second period at 38:03 as Michael Forney finished off a nice move between himself and Chris Higgins.
The home side made it 4-1 in the final period at 50:29 with Derrick Walser firing home his 6th goal of the season on the powerplay.
With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Dundee pulled one goal back through Mikael Lidhammar at 57:04 to make the score 4-2. However Mike Radja scored his second goal of the night at 57:28 to complete the 5-2 win.
Next up for the Giants is an Elite League clash against the Coventry Blaze on Saturday 2nd January, face-off 7pm. The the same two sides meet again on Sunday in Coventry at 5:15pm.
