The Stena Line Belfast Giants defeated the Nottingham Panthers 4-3 away on Sunday to stay in the hunt for the Elite League title with a four point weekend. The win is the Giants second in as many days following Saturday’s 7-2 home win against Fife.
The home side scored first in the game as David Clarke fired past Murphy at 6:44, assisted by Dan Spang and Stephen Schultz.
Blair Riley, assisted by Chris Higgins and Ryan Martinelli grabbed an equaliser for the Giants at 14:50 to bring the score level after the first period.
It was Matt Towe who gave the visitors a lead with only 82 seconds gone in the middle period, assisted by David Rutherford and Brandon Benedict.
At 31:10, Jim Vandermeer dropped the gloves with Brian McGrattan as the two former NHLers went toe-to-toe. The Giants further extended their lead at 32:22 when James Desmarais netted on the powerplay, assisted by David Rutherford.
Only 11 seconds later, Steve Saviano, the Giants four goal hero from Saturday’s 7-2 win, scored on the powerplay at 36:04 to restore the Giants two goal lead.
Into the final period and the Nottingham Panthers took full advantage of the extra man when Stevie Lee scored on the powerplay at 48:20.
With a few minutes remaining on the clock, Giants defenceman Michael Quesnele dropped the gloves with Stevie Lee, timed at 56:14.
Belfast rallied in the latter stages to complete an impressive victory on the road against the Panthers.
