Giants Down Devils In Overtime And Go Top

The Stena Line Belfast Giants defeated the Cardiff Devils in dramatic fashion as Curtis Leonard’s game winning goal gave the Giants a weekend double over the Devils.

1-1 after regulation time, the Giants defeated the Devils in a moment of pure theatre in front of 7,000 fans at The SSE Arena. The Referees reviewed Curtis Leonard’s strike and awarded the goal that gave the Giants the win to send the Belfast crowd into raptures.

The Giants move into first place in the standings, having clawed back an eleven point deficit on the Devils in recent weeks.

Opening Period Penalty Trouble

Special teams were the story of the opening period in Belfast with both sides running into penalty trouble. The penalty killers won out with the game scoreless after the first 20 minutes.

Second Period Stalemate

Netminders Beskorowany and Bowns were the stars of the show during the middle period, turning away 8 and 13 shots respectively. Still the teams were deadlocked at 0-0 – leaving it all to play for in the final period.

Third Period Thriller

The game got it’s opening goal at 46:57 when Chris Higgins dished the puck to Blair Riley and the Giants captain unleashed a ferocious one-timer into the Devils net.

The Devils hit back at 50:56 through Joey Martin, assisted by Jake Morissette and Josh Batch.

Leonard Grabs Winner

Curtis Leonard snatched the game winning goal for the Giants at 63:22 with a fine backhanded effort, assisted by Darcy Murphy and Chris Higgins.
