Pupils from Beechlawn Special School in Royal Hillsborough had one final assignment before heading off on their summer holidays this year, and it has sparked some festive creativity for the Year 14s.
The class has been tasked with the renaming of one of the fantastic light installations that will be part of Christmas at Hillsborough Castle and Gardens, the festive light show which returns to the iconic venue in December.

Over a million lights and seasonal sounds will make up the after-dark illuminated trail throughout the picture-perfect Gardens and will include new installations for 2022. The newly renamed feature by Beechlawn pupils will sit alongside displays by artists from around the world, to be announced later in the year.
The glittering tunnels of light, dancing lakeside reflections and trees drenched in jewel-like colour alongside the fire garden, larger than life illuminations and the chance to spot Father Christmas along the way, welcomed over 49,000 visitors to the Village in 2021.
On a visit to Hillsborough Castle and Gardens recently, the pupils revealed some of their bright ideas for 2022’s new installation – but they won’t be revealed until September!
Andrew Claye, Head of Marketing at Raymond Gubbay, a division of Sony Music which runs the event across the UK, commented that creating festive traditions with family or friends is something to be cherished; “We brought our Christmas illuminations to Hillsborough Castle and Gardens for the first time last year and received wonderful feedback from our visitors who experienced the Gardens in this very magical way, and we are delighted to be returning in 2022.
“We are thrilled to have the creativity of the pupils at Beechlawn School to help us make the trail even more relatable to our local visitors this year, which they can enjoy once it has been installed for the experience which opens in December.”
Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Scott Carson says the attraction is one that benefits Royal Hillsborough village and the surrounding areas; “I am delighted that the light trail at Hillsborough Castle and Gardens in Royal Hillsborough will be back for 2022.
“The Castle continues to attract many visitors each year and I look forward once again to the friendly welcome and atmosphere of the whole village at Christmas time.
“Royal Hillsborough has so much to offer from the Castle & Gardens to restaurants, retailers and the Forest Park to complete a trip with the family.
“This light trail will be a spectacular display to celebrate with loved ones and I look forward to welcoming even more visitors this Christmas.”
The new name for the installation from the Beechlawn class will be revealed in September, but in the meantime, those hoping to catch the trail this year, which will be at Hillsborough Castle and Gardens from 1st December 2022 until 1st January 2023, can book the tickets now via www.hrp.org.uk/christmasathillsborough.
