There’s something deeply reassuring about sitting in a theatre and realising, quite quickly, that you’re in very safe hands. The Importance of Being Earnest at Lyric Theatre is exactly that kind of production — confident, playful and genuinely funny from start to finish.
This is a largely traditional staging, and it absolutely leans into that rather than apologising for it. The sets feel properly rooted in Wilde’s world, while the costumes add a bold, flamboyant energy that keeps everything visually lively. There are a few modern touches sprinkled in — clever rather than showy — but nothing that distracts from the original script or tone. It’s Wilde, served straight, and served well.
Performance-wise, it’s an ensemble triumph. Everyone is clearly enjoying themselves, and that joy ripples straight out into the audience. The women, in particular, are outstanding, with Cecily stealing the show. Her performance is fizzing with charm, precision and comic timing — the kind that earns laughs not just from lines, but from glances and pauses. She’s a delight.

The comedy lands consistently. Big laughs, smart laughs, and those perfectly judged Wildean moments where the absurdity creeps up on you. A slightly unexpected musical interlude pops up along the way — a bit random, admittedly — but it works, adding to the sense that this production isn’t afraid to have fun. The animated transitions between acts are another highlight: inventive, stylish and genuinely engaging rather than filler.
The audience response said it all. Laughter throughout, a real buzz in the room, and a well-earned standing ovation at the end. This felt like a crowd fully on board and enjoying every minute.
If you’re looking for a night of intelligent comedy, gorgeous design and performances that sparkle, this is an easy recommendation. Whether you’re a Wilde fan or just fancy a theatre trip that delivers exactly what it promises — wit, warmth and proper laughs — The Importance of Being Earnest is a cracking night out in Belfast.
Verdict: classic done right. Go, enjoy it, and let Wilde do what he does best.
