DRACULA UNTOLD takes a bite from NI filming locations

A host of iconic National Trust places in Northern Ireland are set to feature in Dracula Untold, one of the biggest films to be released worldwide this autumn.

The Universal Pictures production of Dracula Untold, to be released on 3 October, was filmed at well-known National Trust locations in Northern Ireland including the Giant’s Causeway, Mount Stewart and Divis and the Black Mountain.

Familiar backdrops include the wide open spaces of Divis which hosted battle scenes and the Italian Garden at Mount Stewart which played home to the grounds of Dracula’s castle. Meanwhile it will be hard to miss the world famous Causeway stones which double as a fictional mountain in Transylvania – with a little CGI help.

Jon Kerr, National Trust manager at Mount Stewart: “It was really exciting to host the cast and crew of Dracula Untold at Mount Stewart. To be associated with such a huge Hollywood blockbuster gives us a great opportunity to showcase our wonderful places on a world stage. It’s great not just for National Trust places, but for Northern Ireland as a whole.

“We can’t wait to see our places feature on the big screen and we encourage visitors and film buffs to come and explore these special locations for themselves this autumn.”

“As well as the huge profile that filming brings, every film shot in National Trust places generates income which helps to look after the place in which it was filmed. So there are also huge conservation benefits.”

Location manager, Catherine Geary felt that the variety in Northern Ireland was perfect for the movie. Speaking about Divis she said: “It was wonderfully atmospheric and grey – stunningly desolate and perfect for the Transylvania plains.”

“One of the benefits of being a small country is that you are quickly into diverse countryside. A lot of films that come here think they have to travel far, but an hour to the south you are into forest and mountains and an hour north and you’re into Jurassic coastline.”

Starring Luke Evans, the storyline is based on the original Bram Stoker novel and it also explores the origin of Dracula. The film weaves vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler, depicting Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war.

Gary Shore directs and Michael De Luca produces the epic action-adventure that co-stars Dominic Cooper, Sarah Gadon and Charles Dance.
