Belfast witnessed history under the lights of the Clearer Twist National Stadium as Lewis Crocker became the new IBF welterweight champion with a split-decision victory over Paddy Donovan.

In a fight that lived up to its billing, Crocker produced two crucial knockdowns – in the third and fifth rounds – that ultimately tipped the balance in his favour. The judges returned scorecards of 114-112 and 114-113 for Crocker, while Donovan edged the third with 115-111, leaving the packed stadium on edge before the Belfast man’s arm was finally raised.

For Crocker, the win was more than just a belt – it was redemption. Their first meeting in March ended with a controversial disqualification win for him, and many questioned his credentials at the top level. On Saturday night, he answered those doubts with a sharper, more disciplined display. His timing, economy of punches, and patience in the exchanges made the difference, moving his professional record to an unblemished 22-0.

“Nobody gave me a chance in this fight, nobody,” Crocker roared to the crowd. “But when you write your post tomorrow, make sure you write Lewis Crocker, world champion.”

The Limerick man Donovan, who entered to “Better Off Alone” and brought strong travelling support, was never out of the contest. His jab, footwork, and busy output kept the fight razor close, particularly in the later rounds. But the damage inflicted early on by Crocker’s heavy counters meant Donovan – now 14-2 – had too much ground to make up.

It was the first major boxing night at Windsor Park since Carl Frampton’s 2018 victory over Luke Jackson, and the atmosphere was electric as Belfast welcomed a new hero to the big stage. With Crocker now holding world honours, opportunities for lucrative fights – and perhaps even stadium nights abroad – are sure to follow.

One thing is certain: on a night when the Clearer Twist National Stadium lived up to its name, it was Lewis Crocker who gave the story its final twist
