Belfast has a knack for taking a classic, giving it a wink, a warm hug, and a bit of grit… and somehow making it feel brand new. The Lyric’s A Christmas Carol does exactly that — and then some.
I caught the 6pm performance tonight, walking into a full house with the Salvation Army band playing carols outside in the cold air. It set the tone perfectly: a proper Belfast Christmas night out. A pint of Guinness beforehand didn’t hurt either.
Inside, the energy was buzzing: families, theatre-goers, first-timers — everyone ready for a bit of magic. And the Lyric delivered.

A Clever, Belfast-Framed Adaptation
What makes this production shine is how confidently it relocates Dickens to Belfast. It could easily slip into naff parody, but instead it feels clever, grounded, and genuinely charming. The Belfast accents, the humour, the little local nods — they never undercut the story. They deepen it.
It’s still very much Dickens, but with a Belfast heartbeat.
Staging That Works Hard Without Ever Showing Off
The staging is sharp and imaginative, the lighting rich and atmospheric, the costumes spot-on. Everything feels intentional, like the production is respecting the story rather than trying to outdo it.
And the acting? Outstanding across the board.
But let’s be honest…
Scrooge Steals the Show
A Christmas Carol lives or dies on its Scrooge, and tonight’s was superb. Funny, sharp, miserable in all the right ways, then slowly cracked open until you could feel the warmth creeping back in. A brilliant performance that got the final standing ovation well deserved.

The Heart: Tiny Tim
The emotional punch came, unsurprisingly, from Tiny Tim.
The moment the Ghost of Christmas Present brings us into the Cratchit home and the parents quietly realise this may be Tim’s last Christmas… the whole theatre seemed to hold its breath. It’s tender, beautifully acted, and properly moving.
And then later — after seeing what could have been lost — Scrooge whizzing round with Tiny Tim on the little Glider (their version of a go-kart) is just gorgeous. A simple, wholesome moment that lands harder because you’ve travelled the darker road to get there.
A Show That Leaves You Better Than It Found You
I left the Lyric feeling warm, hopeful, and properly Christmassy — the kind of feeling you don’t get from sticking a film on at home. This production makes you laugh, gets you a bit choked up, then sends you out the doors lighter than when you arrived.
Final Verdict
If you’re looking for a festive night out in Belfast, this is the one.
Perfect for families (older kids will get loads out of it), couples, groups of mates, or anyone who needs their Christmas spirit jump-started.
A gorgeous, cleverly Belfast version of a timeless tale. Don’t miss it.
