5 Tips for Hiring a New Employee during the Pandemic

After the last 18 months of mostly mass panic, stay-at-home orders, and Zoom calls, we are all pretty much au fait with post-pandemic life. Depending on the rules of your State and the number of new daily infections, your life may look a little different to others, but overall the picture is the same.

We know now that we need to learn to live with the virus because economies can’t grind to a halt just because we are in the middle of the greatest public health crisis of the century. Life needs to go on and we have to resume our work schedules as per normal… or, at least, normal-ish.

If your company needs to hire new employees, follow the below five tips to ensure your hiring process is safe and efficient:

  1. Advertise

Companies were all given a free pass at the beginning of the pandemic, especially the larger ones. Let’s face it, no one really knew what was going on in the beginning and we didn’t have a solid plan. We just made things up as we went along (don’t feel bad, Governments did too) and kept our heads down and our faces covered.

Hiring took a backseat while we tried to figure out how long this would last and most people in the market for a new job might assume that this is still the case. Get the word out in a big way that you’re hiring, and the applications will come streaming in.

  1. Interview Remotely

How many business owners and CEOs had mini meltdowns at the thought of having their employees work from home? It was a pretty pathetic attempt in the beginning; mostly only tech companies blazed the path for encouraging and supporting remote working.

Things look different now – most companies have embraced this new way of working – so why not interview remotely too? The information you need to gather from your candidate is the same in person as it is over a video call.

Find a reputable company that will do an employee background check in the UK  – that will be one less thing that you will have to worry about.

  1. Lean into Flexibility

Business needs have changed on so many levels since the outbreak began, so you need to focus on creating flexible roles to fill within your organization. Find and hire employees who are comfortable undertaking several different tasks, both from the office and home.

Clever businesses pivoted during the first half of the lockdowns, and these are the businesses that require equally flexible employees.

  1. Create a Virtual Onboarding Plan

Give new hires access to a virtual smorgasbord of company documents and training information. Your onboarding process needs to function just as smoothly as your virtual interviewing/hiring process.

You could also consider using virtual onboarding software to streamline this process.

  1. Be Honest

These are highly uncertain times for businesses and employees alike. Therefore, you need to keep your recruitment process as transparent as possible. For example, if your company has no intention of keeping its current flexi-time or remote working policies once the pandemic is over, be upfront about that during the hiring process. Being open and honest will help avoid confusion and mix-ups in the future.
