Ulster’s Discipline Falters in Defeat to Benetton

Ulster endured a frustrating afternoon in Italy as discipline issues and a trio of second-half yellow cards saw them fall 34-19 to Benetton in the United Rugby Championship. Despite an encouraging start with three first-half tries from Nathan Doak, Mike Lowry, and Jacob Stockdale, Ulster’s inability to maintain composure after the break proved costly.

Strong Start Undone by Second-Half Struggles

Ulster, boosted by the return of key players Stuart McCloskey, Jacob Stockdale, and James Hume, along with Rob Herring and Cormac Izuchukwu from Six Nations duty, began brightly. Prop Tom O’Toole also made his comeback from suspension, adding further strength to the lineup.

The visitors struck first within the opening five minutes, as Doak capitalized on sustained pressure to score under the posts. Moments later, what looked like another promising move from Ulster turned disastrous when an ambitious offload was intercepted. Benetton’s Matt Gallagher seized the opportunity, kicking forward three times before grounding the ball to level the score.

Ulster quickly responded as Lowry pounced on a loose pass from Tomas Albornoz to cross the line unchallenged. Stockdale’s return to action was marked by a try of his own, combining well with Doak and showing sharp footwork to slice through the Benetton defense.

However, Benetton kept themselves in the contest, with Ignacio Mendy scoring just before halftime after Ulster’s ill-discipline at the scrum. Ulster went into the break with a narrow 19-17 lead but failed to add to their tally thereafter.

Yellow Cards and Missed Opportunities

The second half saw Ulster’s discipline unravel. Referee Craig Evans lost patience early, sending David McCann to the sin bin for repeated infringements. Although Ulster managed to hold their slim advantage during McCann’s absence, their struggles continued.

Nick Timoney’s high tackle earned him a yellow card soon after McCann’s return, allowing Albornoz to kick Benetton into the lead. Ulster’s woes deepened when Stewart Moore was penalized for a deliberate knock-on, reducing them to 13 men. Benetton capitalized with Mirco Spagnolo powering over from close range.

Even when Timoney rejoined the action, Ulster’s attempt at a comeback was thwarted. Matty Rea’s try was disallowed due to an illegal clear-out by O’Toole, and Alessandro Izekor’s late try sealed a bonus-point victory for Benetton.

Ulster’s Season Woes Continue

With this defeat, Ulster has now lost seven of their 11 URC matches this season, languishing in 14th place. The road ahead looks challenging, and with discipline proving to be their Achilles’ heel, Ulster must find a way to regroup and regain their form before it’s too late.
