The Stena Line Belfast Giants are pleased to announce the signing of netminder Carsen Chubak. The 25 year old arrives in Belfast as cover for Stephen Murphy following an injury picked up in Saturday’s 7-4 home win against the Cardiff Devils.
Chubak, a Canadien, brings with him plenty of NCAA experience with three years spent with Niagara University and was a Hobey Baker Finalist in 2013 after posting a .939 Save Percentage – also earning him a spot on the First All-Star team. Carson spent part of last season in the AHL with Adirondack Phantoms – impressing with a .928 Save Percentage and catching the eye of Stena Line Belfast Giants Head of Hockey Operations, Steve Thornton
“He’s a goalie who I think is coming into the peak of his career. He was a Hobey Baker Finalist with Niagara a couple of years ago, a huge reward for the NCAAs which is a great hockey programme. Last year he spent the majority of the season in the AHL – the goalie coach and the people I spoke to had good things to say.”
“He fits the bill for what we need right now. We’ve lost the backbone of our team in Stephen Murphy and we’ve got a guy who wants to come in and establish himself and start his European career. I think we can be a team to help him do that and it’s incentive for him and I like players who come in motivated.”
“Carsen is filling our most important position. Your goalie has to be your best player on every night and be able to steal some games for you, especially on the road. He’s being thrown straight into the fire here, he’s not getting a lot of time to practice, coming in on short notice and he’s playing against two pretty good teams in Sheffield and Nottingham. I think we’ve been spoiled in Belfast with the goaltending over the last number of years and we haven’t had a lot of injuries and it’s a shame we’re in this position but we’re fortunate to have guy like Carsen available to come play for us.”
