Song on BBC Introducing & selected for use by Match of the Day
The Manchester indie band The Nouvelles fronted by Belfast songwriter Johnnie Jackson has commercially released a new song for Northern Ireland’s Euro Finals appearance.
Referred to by Guardian MG music journalist David Sue as “George Best meets the Stone Roses”, the Our Wee Country (or Our Oui Country!) anthem-tune is set to be a great success in green and white army and football circles.
Indie label boss Paul Travis said “its the best football song since New Order did World in Motion”. Hotly tipped Nouvelles, currently signed to A1M Records ,were informally given the idea when they found out that FIFA would allow the Irish Football Association to use a new anthem before games, in 2014, and was due for release through Belfast publisher Shindi.
“The song was written as an anthem idea, as FIFA will allow NI to change from GSTQ, which next to no-one wants as the football anthem. The chorus is easily put into orchestral, which we would do ourselves as our guitarist Tom Kinton has just got out of music school and one of my chums is leading rock pianist etc Drew Forrester who’s working with the Kraftwerk guys at the moment!” Johnnie said. “We then envisaged NI would qualify for 2016 so planned a commercial release for now.
Its an exciting time for the NI football team and we hope everyone gets behind it like our own fans have already. It would go well with the new ground and a new football flag as well as raise the profile of our Euro Finals appearance.” The song already has over 1000 hits on soundcloud, and is available to both listen there and buy as well at www.cdbaby.com/cd/thenouvelles2
The song has been made available for selection by Match of the Day already, and also featured with a phone-in interview with the band, on BBC Introducing earlier this spring. Belfast born Frontman Johnnie is a higher graduate from INCORE/UU in the NI peace process, and has several notable successes working on its fringes.
