Belfast’s award-winning Merchant Hotel has announced a hearty new charity partnership, which aims to raise thousands to help fight some of the most prevalent diseases affecting people in Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke (NICHS) has been named as the luxury hotel’s charity partner for 2014 and will benefit  from a range of high profile awareness and fundraising activities this year, helping aid its work in research, health promotion, rehabilitation and care for those affected by chest, heart and stroke conditions.

As part of the exciting link up, The Merchant will raise vital funds for the charity throughout 2014, with a range of events and fundraising activities. A team from the hotel are currently in training to run the 2014 Belfast City Marathon Relay in aid of NICHS this May. The Merchant’s forthcoming Spring Fashion Teas on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 March will also raise money for the charity, with a luxury ballot running throughout the weekend.

Commenting on the new partnership, Alison McLaughlin, manager of The Gymnasium and The Spa at The Merchant Hotel said:

“The Merchant nominates a new charity each year, as we feel it’s important to give back to the local community. Northern Ireland Chest, Heart & Stroke has been actively working in Northern Ireland for over 65 years, working hard to reduce chest, heart or stroke illnesses and to provide high quality care for those affected by the conditions.

“The aims and objectives of the charity marry well with our holistic approach to wellness, health and nutrition at The Merchant Gymnasium, so there’s a natural synergy between the two brands. We’re thrilled to join forces with this great charity to support their work, through a number of different initiatives to help them work towards their fundraising target.”

As part of the partnership, NICHS will provide a series of health checks to members of The Merchant’s Gymnasium, the first of which took place on Valentine’s Day.

Vanessa Elder from NI Chest, Heart and Stroke added:

“We are so pleased The Merchant has chosen to support the work of NICHS this year.  To help kick off the partnership we offered blood pressure checks and health advice to the hotel’s gym members, as high blood pressure is one of the factors that puts you at risk of heart disease or stroke.

“The money raised through this valuable partnership in 2014 will make a real difference to local people.”
