Royal Ascot is just around the corner — a highlight of the British flat racing calendar and a showcase of class, tradition, and world-class competition.
Among the week’s standout contests is the Queen Anne Stakes, the prestigious Group 1 mile that kicks off the meeting on Tuesday.
Run on the straight course, it draws top older milers from across the globe and has served as a launchpad for some truly elite names in recent seasons, making it an interesting prospect for your first free bet of the week.
This year, Rosallion heads the market at 11/4, following an impressive campaign and a strong showing in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. But before we look ahead, it’s worth looking back at the last five winners of the Queen Anne — a roll call that features some of the finest horses of the modern era.
2024 – Charyn
Charyn had threatened to land a big one for some time, and Royal Ascot proved the perfect stage last year, going one better than his Lockinge Stakes effort at Newbury.
The race developed into a tactical affair with two French raiders racing alone on the far side while the main group followed Lockinge winner Audience.
De Sousa kept Charyn perfectly positioned before unleashing his challenge with two furlongs remaining, pulling clear to win by two and a quarter lengths from Docklands.
The victory confirmed his rapid improvement and marked a breakthrough Group 1 success for connections at racing’s most prestigious meeting.
2023 – Triple Time
At 33/1, Triple Time produced one of the biggest shocks in Queen Anne history, making all the running under Neil Callan to defeat star names Inspiral and Modern Games.
Kevin Ryan’s outsider seized the initiative from the start, dictating the pace on the front end and never allowing his more fancied rivals to settle into their rhythm.
Despite late challenges from the field, Triple Time showed remarkable tenacity to hold on and win by a narrow margin.
2022 – Baaeed
Baaeed produced a performance of stunning dominance, winning with trademark authority under Jim Crowley in a time of 1:37.76 that underlined his exceptional ability.
The unbeaten star travelled ominously well throughout before quickening clear of his rivals with a devastating turn of foot that left the field trailing.
The performance set the tone for what would become one of the most dominant seasons by any miler in recent memory.
2021 – Palace Pier
Palace Pier justified overwhelming favouritism with a smooth, professional display under Frankie Dettori, cruising to victory in 1:39.18.
The unbeaten colt settled perfectly in the early stages before Dettori produced him at the perfect moment to take control of the race.
His class told as he powered clear in the final furlong, winning with the sort of authority that marked him out as Europe’s premier miler.
The victory was a masterclass in race-riding from Dettori, who timed his challenge to perfection on a horse operating at the peak of his powers.
2020 – Circus Maximus
Circus Maximus showed tremendous battling qualities to edge out Terebellum in a thrilling photo finish, with Ryan Moore’s tactical ride proving decisive in the pandemic-delayed Royal Ascot.
The race developed into a war of attrition as the field came under pressure in the final quarter-mile, with Circus Maximus and Terebellum locked together in a desperate struggle to the line.
Moore’s patient ride allowed his mount to find that crucial extra gear when it mattered most, grinding out victory by the narrowest of margins.
