If you’re the patriotic type, or maybe extremely passionate about your country or team during an event like the Olympics. No matter what the reason, if you’ve ever considered getting or flying a flag, there are a few things to know before constructing one.
Before the construction process, consider the design:
Size
The size of the flag you want to fly would determine the size of the flagpole you need. Not only is it important to match for aesthetic purposes, the flag will be dependent on the stability of the pole. If you are running your flag from the ground, you’ll want to consider the height of the pole in relation to the size of your home or whatever building you are displaying your flag in front of.
Quality
Factoring in your budget with the size of the flagpole you want, determine the quality and material you will be able to afford. Aluminum and fiberglass are the most common materials, however, if you are building something smaller and more portable, something like PVC piping may work for smaller needs. The higher the quality material you use, the stronger your flagpole would be able to handle higher wind speeds and unpredictable weather. In addition, flagpoles may have different finishes to consider to withstand those different weather conditions.
The Raising and Lowering Mechanisms
A Halyard, the flagpole rope, will be important to think about when building your flagpole. You will have to decide upon an external mechanism, suitable for homes and smaller locations. An internal mechanism may be more appropriate or suitable for a larger flag displayed on a bigger property such as a commercial location.
Portability
- Does your flagpole need a base?
- Or are you hanging the flag from an elevated area?
- Maybe you aren’t looking for a permanent place for your flag and instead are looking to have it portable and easy to move. This information will translate to you needing to create a strong enough base to hold the pole as well.
Wind Speed
Flag poles have different ratings on how they match up to wind testing. Your location should factor in on what type of pole you are searching for, especially if the weather can be rough in your area.
Once you’ve got all the proper information, you can purchase the materials needed for your flagpole. However, if after doing your research on what needs to be done to construct your own flagpole and think it’s too much for you to handle; you can always just buy a titan flagpole to help make things easier for you. The proper kit will come with everything you need to install your flagpole whenever you want, at home, by yourself with all the proper instructions.
If building things from scratch is more your style, then below is a list of the materials you’ll need to build your flagpole.
These are some materials you may need:
- Two 5-gallon (19 L) or larger buckets
- 8-foot (2.4 m) or longer piece of PVC pipe
- Tape measure
- Hacksaw
- Magic marker
- Quickset cement
- Shovel or hoe
- Water
- Petroleum jelly
- Plastic sheeting
- Duct tape
- Drill
- Screwdriver
- Level
- Rope cleat
- Truck pulley
- Hooks/Carabiners
- Rope
Follow these 3 steps to building your flagpole:
1. The Pole
The first part will be building the actual pole. We’ll go over simple steps of how to build your own DIY PVC pipe flagpole.
- Cut your PVC pipe to your desired height
- Mark the halfway point to attach the rope cleat
- Drill holes and follow the installation instructions for the cleat
- Attach flagpole truck pulley to one end of the PVC
2. The Base
The second part will be creating the base. If this is a portable and smaller pole, the base may be made out of quick dry concrete and a bucket. If it is a larger pole, you may want to install it into the ground, these instructions will differ. You will use the flagpole to help create the mold.
- Wrap the PVC with plastic and cover with petroleum jelly to prevent sticking when making base
- Mix up quick dry cement, following instructions on the packaging
- Set the pole in the bucket, have a second person hold the pole so the angle is perfectly vertical and to prevent creating a crooked base
- Pour cement into bucket around the pole
- Leave the cement to dry overnight
3. Finishing the Flag
Once the base sets, the third and final step is where you’ll complete the installation of the flagpole.
- Remove the flagpole and take the plastic wrap off, discarding the plastic
- String a rope through the installed pulley
- Attach flag hooks to the rope
- Hang your flag and tie the rope around the cleat
And there you have it, you chose a flagpole to meet all your needs of size and quality kept in mind, and built a flagpole exact to your specifications with this quick guide. Now you are ready to raise your flag and fly it high and proud for everyone to see.
