As part of Homelessness Awareness Week, SOS Bus NI are running their annual sleep out challenge at Writer’s Square, Belfast, on 27th November (7pm to 7am on 28th).
Food poverty is rising in Northern Ireland and SOS Bus NI’s work on the streets of Belfast supporting the vulnerable, including homeless people, is intensifying. With this event we endeavour to make a difference by raising awareness of these critical social issues that need to be addressed as robustly as possible.
The SOS Sleep Out does not aim to replicate homelessness, but to highlight the plight of the homeless – the biting cold, the damp, the noise and the difficulty of carrying on your day with little sleep. It is not an easy challenge but there will entertainment, games and food for participants to enjoy before bedtime.
SOS NI has been supporting the homeless and those who are vulnerable in Belfast for eight years, engaging with over 35,000 people each year. In September alone our SOS Food Programme volunteers collected and distributed almost 300 crates of food from supermarkets to asylum seekers, homeless shelters and Women’s Aid groups – food which would have otherwise gone to waste. We are now organising our third annual Sleep Out and would be delighted if you could join us. Funds raised will enable us to continue supporting some of the most disadvantaged individuals who find themselves in crisis on the streets of Belfast.
Registration is £20 and the totality of funds raised will go to the SOS Bus NI’s bus services and food programme. A registration pack can be obtained by contacting Alison at the office contact on 02890 664 505 or by e-mailing alison.steers@sosbusni.com.
We would be very grateful for promotion through local media outlets to reach the wider audience in anticipation of the event and encourage further registrations.
