Smart Checks That Will Help Your Car Pass Its MOT Test

Many cars fail their MOT inspection each year needlessly. Of course, if there is a structural fault that causes it to fail, then you will need a mechanic to resolve the problem. However, there are many minor faults that your car might be picked up on that don’t require any specialist knowledge or skills to put right. Why put your car through its MOT when it might easily fail simply because you haven’t made a few smart checks? After all, many of them are good practice anyway regardless of whether your car is due an MOT soon. Remember that Elite offers professional MOT services in London. Book online! In the meantime, which checks should you be making?

Tyre Safety

More cars fail their MOTs because their tyres are not in good order than for any other reason. Sometimes, drivers simply don’t have them pumped up enough. Remember that you should be reinflating your tyres to the recommended level every few times you fill up with fuel. As well as ensuring they are properly inflated, you should look for signs of wear on the tread. Tyres that have tread below the legal minimum will result in an MOT failure. Check the sidewalls, too, since signs of damage and deterioration in them can also be a danger, resulting in a failed test.

Occupant Safety

Car seatbelts should all work properly which means they shouldn’t be frayed and nor should there be any issue with them locking into their buckles properly. Untwist any that need it so they move freely. Remember that airbags should only be switched off under certain conditions, such as when a child or baby seat has been fitted.

Driver Visibility

You need to be able to see clearly from your car or it will not pass its MOT inspection. Small chips in your windscreen are okay so long as they’re not turning into cracks. Even small amounts of damage near to your eye line will result in a failure, however. Get your windscreen replaced if you cannot see out of it properly. Likewise, you need to be able to use your mirrors so any that have shattered should be repaired. Make sure your windscreen wipers work properly when they’re turned on. It doesn’t take much to replace wiper blades, if needed, after all. Finally, make sure you can see properly meaning that all of your car’s lamps, including your headlights, work properly.
