Rory McIlroy To Play In World Cup Of Golf After All- For Northern Ireland!
”That might change things a little bit,” was Rory McIlroy’s reply when he was told Northern Ireland would be a new country in the World Cup Of Golf under a revised format.
McIlroy had said that he would not represent Ireland in the event this year as it would have the knock-on effect of forcing him to then play for Ireland (and not Team GB)in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The change of heart comes as the World Cup announced it was moving to Royal Melbourne in Australia this Autumn under a new format. Interestingly Royal Melbourne will also host the Australian Masters the previous week, and will no doubt see its field boosted by World Cup stars attempting to get in some course practice.
Graeme McDowell was also hopeful McIlroy would join him again. ”I need my partner in crime in Melbourne,” he said. ”Regardless whether Rory wants to play or not, I want to play this year. If it works, I’d like him to be there, as well. But we’ll see.”
New World Cup Format
The event takes place Nov. 21-24 2013
The new format will have an individual prize pot of $7 million with a further $1 million set aside for the winning team.
The format will be strokeplay.
The combined scores of the two man team will contribute to the team score.
The field will be 60 players but Countries will be allowed have up to four players provided they are inside the top 15 in the world.
Only the two highest ranked players will make up the country’s team.
