“Chronicles of Long Kesh” offers a captivating, humorous, and at times, shocking depiction of Northern Ireland’s notorious prison, Long Kesh. The play, brought to life by Martin Lynch’s masterful storytelling, weaves together the perspectives of prison officers, Republicans, and Loyalists, showcasing a diverse array of characters including patriots, opportunists, leaders, wives, escapers, and hypochondriacs.

Set against the backdrop of the Troubles, the play is a crowd-pleaser, filled with 1960s Motown hits and irreverent humor. Despite its violent scenes and frequent swearing, it delivers a powerful message about the futility of the hunger strikers’ deaths, making for a thought-provoking experience.

The cast, featuring superb actors, brings Lynch’s narrative to life with remarkable versatility. Gerard McCabe stands out with his portrayal of the endearing, seagull-loving Toot, who he seamlessly transforms into a menacing prison guard. Jo Donnelly’s impressive range is evident as she shifts from a prisoner’s wife to the tough Loyalist Thumper.

Directors Lisa May and Martin Lynch excel with a minimal yet effective set, enhancing the narrative without overshadowing the actors’ performances. The writing delves deep into the motivations behind the characters’ involvement in the conflict, providing a comprehensive view of life both inside and outside the prison walls.

The show balances humor and heartache, keeping the audience engaged throughout. Martin Lynch’s script, combined with Lisa May’s signature physical theatre, offers an artistic interpretation of life in Long Kesh. Performances by Marty Maguire as Oscar, Shaun Blaney as Eamon, Warren McCook as Hank, and Jimmy Doran as Prison Officer Freddie, who also serves as the story’s narrator, are all commendable.

“Chronicles of Long Kesh” is a must-see production, running at the Grand Opera House until Saturday, 8 June, offering a blend of humor, drama, and poignant reflection on a turbulent chapter of Northern Ireland’s history.
