It’s been a turbulent few months at Ibrox, and tonight the uncertainty has reached its peak — Rangers have confirmed the departure of head coach Russell Martin after just 17 games in charge.
The decision comes after a string of underwhelming results and growing unrest among supporters. Martin’s final game in charge, a 1-1 draw away to Falkirk, was marred by fan protests, with police called in as frustrations boiled over outside the stadium.
Despite initial optimism when he took the reins, Martin’s tenure never truly gained momentum. Rangers struggled to find consistency, managing only one win in their opening seven league fixtures and sitting eighth in the Scottish Premiership — 11 points adrift of leaders Hearts heading into the second international break.
Their European campaign was even more damaging. The Glasgow side suffered a bruising 9-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs back in August, a result that set the tone for what has been a challenging start to the season.
In total, Martin oversaw five wins in all competitions, alongside assistant Matt Gill and first-team coach Mike Williamson, both of whom will also depart the club.
In an official statement, Rangers thanked the 39-year-old and his staff for their commitment, saying:
“Russell and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them well for the future.”
Attention will now turn to who takes over the reins at Ibrox, as the club look to stabilise their season and reignite their challenge for domestic honours.
