Popular STD Treatments And Where To Find Them

Across the world, STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), also known as STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections), has been a growing concern. These diseases are typically acquired and transmitted through physical, sexual contact. The bacteria, viruses and harmful parasites that carry STDs are transferred from one person to another through blood, semen, and other bodily fluids. In some cases, STDs could also get transmitted from expectant pregnant mothers to their unborn infants during pregnancy or even at the time of childbirth.

Sometimes, STDs have also been transmitted through blood transfusions and other direct contamination of medical equipment. It has been found that STDs have been transferred and contracted from people who visibly appear to be perfectly healthy and sometimes may not even know they have an infection. Many first-level patients find aciclovir tablets online as their front-line emergency treatment.

What Are The Common Symptoms Of STDs?

STDs generally display different symptoms depending on individual cases, but among the most commonly found are:

  • Genital Sores
  • Pain and burn sensation when passing urine
  • Uncontrolled genital discharge
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Immense pain during sexual contact
  • Soreness and swelling in the groin
  • Pinprick pain in the lower abdomen
  • Fever
  • Rashes and reddening of the skin in the trunk, hands, or feet

Most of the symptoms and signs of possible STDs appear just a few days after transmission or exposure. However, it has been found that it has taken a while, even a few years, before noticing any problems. That is why it goes unnoticed until one of the partners develops health issues or medical complications.

What are the Tests Available?

The best approach to treating STDs or STIs is to get laboratory testing done. This will help pinpoint and identify the type, cause and way-forward for the possible treatment method. It will also help to detect if you have any other co-infections. The most common tests are:

  • Blood test: to verify, pinpoint, and/or confirm the diagnosis
  • Urine sample testing: to identify specific types of infections
  • Fluid samples: to identify infections in open genital sores

What are the Treatments Available?

STDs caused by known or common bacteria are usually treated easily and quickly. There could be some viral STD infections that would be possible to manage but not cure in specific cases. Similarly, some bacterial STDs are treated with the administration of certain antibiotics. The infected person needs to follow the prescribed treatment regimen, sometimes even after the symptoms reduce or go away. If the infected person is an expectant or pregnant mother, it is vital that she gets tested and treated immediately to prevent or reduce the risk to the baby.

The treatment for STDs usually follows one of the below-mentioned regimens, depending on the infection’s type, stage, and severity.

  • Antibiotics-based Treatment:

If properly taken, antibiotics help cure a host of STDs, especially bacteria and parasite-transmitted infections. These could cover gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia and trichomoniasis. It is observed that, in most cases, gonorrhoea and chlamydia often appear together, so they get treated at one time. The key to proper treatment and cure is to complete the prescribed antibiotic dosage regimen and ensure it is followed exactly as per the doctor’s instruction.

Most medical practitioners recommend abstinence from any physical contact (no indulging in sexual activity), at least for ten days after the antibiotic treatment dosage. This is basically to allow the proper curing of any sores if the same persists.

  • Antiviral Drugs:

These are generally prescribed for specific cases and types of STD infections. There are treatment protocols that could help ensure that the patient will have a lower rate of recurrence of the disease. This is usually seen in patients opting for daily suppressive therapy and the prescription dosage of antiviral medication.

The prescribed antiviral drugs can help keep certain transmittable infections in check for more extended periods. It is advised to remember that even though such treatments have been implemented, there is a possibility that the patient may still carry the virus and could possibly transmit it too.

If you have an STD, it is best to visit the doctor to consult, test, and receive treatment. This helps ensure that the therapy opted for has worked and that you have not been re-infected. In most cases, lifestyle changes, home remedies, and OTC (over-the-counter) medication options could also be opted for. This would help ease the most visible symptoms and help the healing process.

It is best to take medications as prescribed and directed. It is also essential to finish the course of treatment even after symptoms are treated. Doing this will help control and avoid future infection recurrence.
