Podcasting is stepping into the spotlight at this year’s Belfast Media Festival (BMF), as the much-celebrated television and film industry event expands its focus to one of the fastest-growing corners of the media world.   The much-celebrated television and film industry event will see, for the first time, two live podcast recordings and a special ‘Academy’ podcasting event designed to inspire the next wave of storytellers exploring how podcasts are driving new opportunities across film, TV and digital media.

Tara Mills and Declan Harvey will record their BBC News NI podcast, ‘The State of Us’ on Tuesday 11th November to BMF, with some special guests.

Peter Fincham and Jimmy Mulville will record a special episode of the popular ‘Insiders: The TV Podcast’ which explores the latest television industry news blended with their own experiences and anecdotes on 12th November at 12.30pm.  The pair are also invitingaudience participation, taking questions from attendees in advance. Questions can be submitted by visiting the Belfast Media Festival Instagram page.

The festival will also host Create Ructions: Podcast It. Film It. Own It., a 40-minute session featuring Jo Meek (The Pitcairn Trials, Wondery), Rachel Hooper (The Brighton Bomb, Walk on Air/BBC Radio 4) and Jane Gogan (The Witness – In His Own Words, RTÉ/Yellow Path*) in conversation with Clare McGinn (Napoleon’s Nose Creative Media). The session will explore how powerful stories can travel across funders, borders and formats, offering behind-the-scenes insights into how deals are made, why holding your IP matters, and how podcasting can act as a launchpad for film and TV.

Jennifer Johnston, Chair of Belfast Media Festival commented:
“At BMF we are proud to be a cross-genre festival, and as such we are thrilled to bring podcasts into the mix.  Our theme this year is, ‘Future in Frame’ which highlights our focus on looking ahead and considers how we can frame the future and move forward as an industry.   We are curious to explore how our industry can evolve and embrace new forms of storytelling. Podcasting is a huge part of that future, and we’re excited to celebrate it.”

The festival, which is in its 16th year, will for the first time span across 3-days with a mix of headline speakers, panel sessions and interactive workshops.  All events are free and highlights this year include, Banijay UK’s Executive Chairman Patrick Holland, the teams behind BAFTA award-winning series, Blue Lights, Channel 4 TV series, Trespasses(which is based on Holywood native, Louise Kennedy’s breakout debut novel) and TG4’s Irish language sensation, Cráand many more.

Belfast Media Festival will take place from 11-13th November in The MAC Belfast, and is supported by Channel 4, Northern Ireland Screen and BBC Northern Ireland.  Registrations are available via: belfastmediafestival.co.uk.  Please follow Belfast Media Festival on Instagram and LinkedIn to hear the latest updates.
