Patrick Brown, a member of the Alliance Party and representative for South Down, has officially resigned from his assembly seat, the party confirmed. The announcement came on a recent Tuesday evening, with a spokesperson citing personal reasons for Brown’s departure. The party expressed gratitude for his contributions and extended their best wishes for his future pursuits.
Reflecting on his tenure, Brown stated, “It has been a privilege to serve the local community and address significant issues on their behalf.” He expressed pride in his accomplishments and reaffirmed his dedication to the principles of the Alliance Party. “After nearly a decade as an elected official, I believe now is the appropriate moment to step down for personal reasons,” Brown remarked. He highlighted his efforts in various areas, including aiding flood victims, advocating for environmental and animal rights, and his involvement in the Windsor Framework and Infrastructure Committees.
Brown’s political career began on the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in 2014, and he continued to serve until his election to Stormont in 2022. According to Stormont regulations, the Alliance Party will have the opportunity to co-opt a replacement for the vacant seat, avoiding the need for a by-election. The party is required to choose a successor within seven days.
