Belfast comes alive from 9th – 16th August 2014 with the taste, music and culture of the Caribbean, courtesy of the One Love Festival.
The Festival bursts into life on the 9th with a launch event at Belfast City Hall featuring a procession of carnival performers dancing to the tropical rhythms of steel and samba drummers; a Caribbean food-fest and an exhibition highlighting the Caribbean community’s contribution to the life and prosperity of the province.
One of the Festival highlights will be a theatrical production inspired by the music of reggae legend Bob Marley. “One Love – The Musical” echoes the theme of the entire Festival, sending a clear message to people enslaved by hate and indifference to put this aside and celebrate life and the things we all have in common. The production takes place at the MAC on Thursday 14th August.
The week’s programme also includes:
• A Caribbean Summer Gig featuring an eclectic mix of live reggae, soca, calypso, R&B, blues and soul from artists such as Kaz Hawkins, Manukahunney and a cadre of musicians with roots from Belfast to Barbados! (Black Box, Friday 15 August)
• Cultural and Story Telling workshops in the Titanic Quarter
• Intercultural Live Lounge Talk Shows
• The big sound system and dancehall culture at a reggae dancehall night featuring Explosion Sound System
• Caribbean cultural food nights at the Windrush Island Café, University Road, Belfast
• Summer Family Health , Fitness & Sports Day ( Queens PEC, Sat 16th August)
The One Love Festival is the centrepiece of Caribbean Week, a series of events and activities organised by ACSONI and the Caribbean community. Its simple aim is to celebrate diversity and foster unity, love and hope in a divided society.

An exciting production inspired by the words contained in songs of Jamaican reggae legend Bob Marley particularly “Redemption song”, “One Love” explores the theme of mental slavery through music and a series of gripping monologues, visual imagery, poetry and creative dance.
The storyline follows the struggles and lives representing our diverse cultures in Northern Ireland and highlights how hate and intolerance has enslaved the minds of so many.
One Love is a story of redemption and the intense performance will take you on a roller-coaster journey of deep emotions.
This performance will challenge us to reflect on our own lives and will lead us all on a journey from darkness to light that ends in jubilant expressions of freedom.
