Northern Ireland began their Nations League journey on a high with a confident 2-0 win against Luxembourg at Windsor Park, opening their Group C3 campaign in style. Paddy McNair opened the scoring early, finding the net in the 11th minute after pouncing on a loose ball from a corner. Defender Dan Ballard extended the lead just five minutes later, skillfully flicking in George Saville’s low free-kick.

Although Northern Ireland couldn’t extend their lead in the second half, they were rarely tested by the visitors, maintaining control of the game. This win marks Michael O’Neill’s first Nations League triumph and Northern Ireland’s second victory in their last 17 outings in the competition. It’s also their fourth win in the last six matches, signaling a promising direction for O’Neill’s young squad in his second spell as manager.

Returning to Windsor Park for the first time since November’s memorable victory against Denmark, the team’s recent good form continued in front of a lively home crowd. Captain for the night, 22-year-old Sunderland defender Trai Hume, led the team out in his debut role as skipper following Jonny Evans’ retirement from international football. The hosts started brightly under the cool Belfast evening sky, with forwards Callum Marshall and Dion Charles getting close early on from set pieces.
The breakthrough came when McNair capitalized on a miscleared long throw from Ciaron Brown, calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner. Northern Ireland’s momentum grew, and it wasn’t long before Ballard made it two. After Conor Bradley was fouled just outside the box, Ballard once again showcased his attacking instincts, flicking home Saville’s free-kick in the 17th minute, replicating his goal against Spain earlier this year.
As the half progressed, Bradley almost added a spectacular third, but Luxembourg’s Christopher Martins cleared the danger. Moments later, captain Hume curled a shot that clipped the outside of the post, missing out on what would’ve been a deserved goal. Luxembourg’s only real chance of note came just before the halftime whistle, with Leandro Barreiro shooting over from close range.
The second half saw Northern Ireland almost score within minutes as Bradley and Hume combined to set up Isaac Price, who fired wide from inside the area. Hume, continuing his impressive performance, came close once again with a volley that just missed the target. Bradley later found himself with a golden opportunity to score, but his shot went wide after breaking free on goal.

Despite a defensive mix-up between Bailey Peacock-Farrell and McNair that nearly allowed Luxembourg a clear shot, Northern Ireland remained in control. Substitute Ross McCausland was twice denied by goalkeeper Anthony Moris late in the game, but the home side comfortably closed out the match, taking all three points and a clean sheet to start their Nations League campaign on the right foot.
Northern Ireland now look ahead to their upcoming fixture against Bulgaria, who were held to a 0-0 draw against Belarus, despite being reduced to 10 men in the second half. O’Neill’s men will be aiming to continue their strong start on Sunday.
