Multi-Cultural Pop-Up Market Brings International Food, Arts and Crafts to Belfast To Turn Local Ethnic Minority Residents’ Lives Around

Date: Sunday 9 March 2014
Time: 12noon – 3:30pm
Location: Black Box, Hill Street, Belfast

On Sunday 9 March visitors to the Black Box in Belfast will be treated to a truly international experience at a free Global Village Market event where they will sample freshly-made dishes and pastries, and discover beautiful jewellery and crafts for sale hand made by Belfast residents including people from Hungary, China, Slovakia, Africa, Italy, the Philippines, South America and of course Northern Ireland.

Visitors will also tap their feet to the beat of international rhythms as they take a break from shopping, discovering new tastes or even taking away goulash for a Sunday dinner with a difference, to watch traditional Mexican and Indian dance performances and admire international arts exhibitions.

Organised by the Lagan Village Youth and Community Centre, the event is funded under the Lipstick and Money 2 Programme by East Belfast Enterprise, DEL & the European Social Fund, BHSCT and the Unemployed Resource Centre through a large Big Lottery Integration grant.

Participants have been working tirelessly over the past few months to make this a success: they have taken English classes and learned to make delicate arts and crafts through an income-generating course aimed at increasing their confidence in connecting with the local community and boost their entrepreneurial spirit.

Kerry Melville who developed the event on behalf of the Lagan Village Youth and Community Group, said: “The success of this event will open a new life for families who hope to make it a monthly event which eventually will help them to support themselves financially whilst feeling like productive and valued members of society.”

Yeebun Li, a Chinese artist who will be exhibiting her work, said: “This is all new to me; I spent the last 20 years working for the NHS until my health deteriorated, so my contract was terminated last year. To keep myself sane, I started making jewellery and key rings. All items are made from Chinese knots using satin and rattail with jade stone and Swarovski/AB crystals. This is the first time my items will be on show!”
