A Father-Daughter jump for Marie Curie Cancer Care

Kevin Moreland and his daughter Rachel from East Belfast completed their Parachute Jump for Marie Curie Cancer Care at the end of March this year.

Kevin is a seasoned fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care and had always said he would like to do a parachute jump, so when his daughter Rachel’s birthday was coming up and she suggested they do one together, he couldn’t say no.

Together they planned their jump for a week after Rachel’s birthday with Moonjumper Skycentre and began their fundraising.

“We have raised over £700 for this event so far and I will continue to do as much as I can for this wonderful Charity.”

Kevin has been supporting Marie Curie Cancer Care since 2000 when he lost 3 members of his family within the year and experienced the care given at the Belfast Hospice and the Nursing Service at home.

Kevin said: “The service was exceptional. They made it dignified and peaceful which enabled us to savour those last moments with our loved ones. I want, in some way, to give back to Marie Curie and also to help other families receive the care we were so thankful for.”

Marie Curie Cancer Care has 200 nurses and healthcare assistants across Northern Ireland, providing free, end of life care allowing people to die at home surrounded by family and friends. Care costs millions to provide and the charity depends on the support of the public to fund its services.

When talking about the jump itself, Kevin said: “I wasn’t nervous through the training or even when the shutter went up, although according to Rachel I was very quiet. As we edged towards the doorway and my instructor leaned me out, I tucked my feet to the undercarriage of the plane and was facedown into a sea of clouds!

I felt utter exhilaration tumbling in the air and then free falling 5,000 feet; and I was complimented on a perfect landing. Rachel closed her eyes going out with fear but when she opened them mid fall she loved it. I cannot recommend this event enough; if I could do it all again tomorrow I would. My next event? Maybe a Balloon Parachute…maybe, just maybe!”

Marie Curie Cancer Care’s next sponsored Parachute Jump is taking place on Saturday 29 June 2013 in Garvagh, Co Derry/Londonderry. Minimum sponsorship is £400
