James McGinn LCN Lifetime Achievement Award at the Europa

James McGinn LCN Lifetime Achievement recognition landed on home turf — one of Northern Ireland hospitality’s biggest individual honours.

The Managing Director of Hastings Hotels was presented with the Licensed & Catering News Lifetime Achievement Award at the LCN Awards 2026 on Friday 12 June, at the Europa Hotel in Belfast. For McGinn, that venue was never just a ballroom. It is where his Hastings journey began 31 years ago.

LCN’s Lifetime Achievement Award recognises a long-serving figure for their contribution to hospitality in Northern Ireland. McGinn’s CV makes the case without much help: more than three decades with Hastings, two decades as General Manager of the Europa, and Managing Director since late 2021.

From Europa GM to Hastings MD

He has already been marked out nationally — LoveBelfast covered his place among Britain’s top hoteliers when he made the Brit List as a beacon of excellence in British hospitality. Closer to home, he has also been the public face of Hastings’ ongoing investment, including the Culloden Estate upgrades and new visual identity.

An MBE for tourism and hospitality — presented by Princess Anne at Windsor — sits on the shelf too. On this Friday night in Belfast, though, the story was the LCN award and the room that watched him take it.

“Plenty of fuel left in the tank”

“I’m delighted to receive it here, at the Europa Hotel, where my Hastings journey began 31 years ago,” McGinn said on the night. “There’s still plenty of fuel left in the tank.”

He thanked LCN’s Bill and Wynn Penton and sponsors Linen Care. Andy McNeill is now General Manager of the Europa.

A strong night for Hastings

It was a busy night for the group more widely. The Europa took Hotel of the Year (75+ rooms), and Kyle King of the Culloden was named Bar Person of the Year — colour around the main story, not the headline.

For Belfast readers, the point is simpler: one of the city’s best-known hoteliers was recognised where it started, in the hotel that still carries his fingerprints. Hastings Hotels remains central to how Belfast sells itself overnight — and McGinn is still the one steering it.
