In focus: The Socceroos’ best performances at the World Cup

While the Socceroos aren’t particularly synonymous with international football, their performances at the FIFA World Cup are respectable. Considering the beautiful game is the fifth most popular sport at the professional level in Australia – behind that of rugby league, AFL, rugby union and cricket – the men from Down Under do well relative to the sport’s funding and resources at their disposal.

While their losing percentage at World Cups make for dreadful reading (63%), Australia have garnered a reputation for being a tough out – particularly against some of the world’s better teams, even if their pre-tournament world cup 2022 odds didn’t reflect that. With that in mind, read on as we take a look at Australia’s best performances at the World Cup to date.

Australia vs Japan (3-1) – 2006

With their heroics in the World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay, in which they booked their spot at a World Cup for the first time in 32 years – the Aussies were taking an enormous amount of confidence heading into the World Cup finals in Germany in 2006. Additionally, with the Socceroosfielding their most talented side ever, which included the likes of Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka, Mark Schwarzer and Tim Cahill – Australian fans were quietly optimistic that they could make some noise in Germany.

Make some noise they did. After going down 1-0 in their opening World Cup fixture against Japan – the Socceroosfought back to score three late goals in the final 10 minutes of play. It was a coming out party for the country’s greatest ever international footballer, Cahill – who scored a brace en route to helping Australia secure their first win at a World Cup in the nation’s history.

Australia vs Serbia (2-1) – 2010

After their strong campaign four years prior in Germany, there were now expectations on this Socceroos team to deliver in South Africa. Having already drawn 1-1 with Ghana to coincide with a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Germany in their two earlier group games – consecutive round of 16 appearances looked unlikely. While they could tie Ghana on points with a win over Serbia, it was their poor goal difference which would prove tough to overcome.

Even if it was mathematically difficult to secure a top two spot in Group D, finishing off their campaign with a victory would do the squad the world of good. Once again it was Cahill who was the hero for the Socceroos, with the then-Everton striker breaking the deadlock with his signature header in the 69th minute. That was followed just four minutes later with an unbelievable strike well outside the box from Brett Holman – making it 2-0 to Australia.

Serbia would go on to score a consolation goal courtesy of Marko Pantelic with six minutes remaining in normal time, however, it was too little too late as Australia secured their second ever World Cup win.

Netherlands vs Australia (3-2) – 2014

Facing an uphill battle against one of the best teams at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Australia showed that they refuse to lie down, irrespective of the talent of the opposition. Despite the Netherlands boasting world-class players such as Robin van Persie, Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben, the Socceroos took the fight to the Louis van Gaal-managed side from the opening whistle.

It would be the Dutch who would strike first however, with Robben finding the bottom left corner of the net in the 20thminute to give his team the ascendency. The Socceroos would hit back immediately a minute later, with Cahill delivering a Puskas Award contender. After an inviting ball into the box, Cahill connected with a beautiful volley on his unpreferred left foot to score and tie things up. Socceroos captain Mile Jedinak then scored from the spot, giving Australia an unexpected 2-1 lead with 36 minutes remaining.

Van Persie and company would show their class down the stretch however, scoring twice inside ten minutes to help the Oranje win the contest 3-2. Although the Socceroos ended up losing, the fact they were able to push the eventual finalists right down to the wire shows that Australia are regularly worthy World Cup participants.
